Flying Dutchman: signature cocktail KLM

It’s Sunday. Day many of the quarantine. Another day to dream away of your next holiday destination at the Caribbean. Today we will dream away with the perfect cocktail! The cocktail my holiday is always starting with. Even when it’s a staycation*. The Flying Dutchman. The signature cocktail of the KLM.

Every empty bottle is filled with a great story

Going on holiday is much more than being at your destination. It is everything around it. Preparing your booking, packing your bags. All your expectations and preparations. It all contributes to your holiday and your holiday feeling. Why should you miss this whole experience when we are not able to travel? Just make it yourself comfortable at home and start enjoying! Without packing your bags, but with preparing your new to be favorite cocktail.

The recipe

The Flying Dutchman is a cocktail developed specially for KLM (the Dutch royal airline) by Bols, the world’s oldest distilled spirits brand. It is served in KLM’s business class on board of the planes. It is such a tasteful and refreshing drink, you definitely have to try it!

The ingredients

The cocktail was only available on board or you could buy it in KLM’s online shop. Unfortunately, since last months the shop is under construction so I couldn’t order any bottle. That’s why I started to check my thousands of pictures of all holidays, because I knew I made a picture of the ingredient list. Lucky me I am a kind of a hoarder and I never throw away my pictures. I found it and I started trying to create the perfect combination. And… I got a creation that comes pretty close to the original one. Happy to share it with you.

What do you need:

  • 1 part of Bols Damrak gin
  • 1 part of Bols Blackberry Liquor
  • 3 parts of Fresh squeezed lemon juice (keep one slice of lemon for garnishment)
  • a little bit of Simple syrup
  • or 2 parts of Fresh squeezed lemon juice and 1 part of Sprite of Seven Up or another lemon squash
  • a few ice cubes

The preparation:

Put one ice cube in a cocktail shaker, add all the ingredients all at the same time. If you are using the Sprite or Seven Up don’t add this yet. Close the cocktail shaker and shake everything together. Put a few ice cubes in a glass and pour the cocktail in it. Finish with a (durable, reusable) straw and a slice of lemon. And enjoy!

Be prepared!

I often get the question where I buy my kitchen and bar utilities. Actually, I collect them whenever I find something that I don’t have yet. Or when I read a recipe that requires extra tools.

A bit of history: the Flying Dutchman

The name of the cocktail is derived from the legendary ghost ship. The ship never moors at any harbor and is doomed to sail on the oceans for ever and ever. The whole story is a myth, but it definitely keeps a lot of people attracted and curious. The legend finds its origin in the 17th-century golden age of the Dutch East India Company.

* Note: A staycation or holistay is a period in which we stay home and participate in leisure activities within driving distance of our home and which doesn’t require overnight accommodations (definition as published on Wikipedia).
